My favorite part about this piece is the contrast and the shading put into all of the scales and the eye. I wanted to make it appear as if there was one light source, and to do that I needed to make sure the the highlights matched the side on which the light was coming from on every single scale. One thing I found challenging while creating this piece was blending the white charcoal with the black charcoal and making sure that not one scale appeared too different in tone than the others. I was able to overcome this difficulty by going over all of the scales with my blending tools several times, and then looking at my finished product from a distance to make sure they all looked the same.

What I like most about this piece is the detail that was able to make the drawing look 3D, and the shading that makes the folds pop out. In this drawing, I most;y focused on the soft and hard lines, and making sure that the hard lines were focused where the folds bean, and the soft lines where blended out where the folds ended. The hardest part about creating this piece was making sure I didn't blend the shadows of the folds into the white charcoal. I made sure that the contrasts were drawn clearly by only adding a little black charcoal at a time, making sure not to put too much and taking my time.

The part of this painting that I like the most is the use of geometric shapes to create the image. This piece is supposed to display lots of shape, which I did by drawing clouds, the moon, and triangles and rhombuses. The most difficult part of painting this work was blending the colors in the sky. I wanted to create a blend from light blue to dark blue, and I also wanted to add a hue of purple so the sky would match the colors used in the ground. I was able to blend the different shades by using a small sponge.

My favorite part of this drawing is the contrast in the deigns that I used. To draw the flower, I created a very intricate, free-handed pattern, and for the leaves, I used color to blend each one from light green to dark green. I did this to bring out the detail in the flower, because I wanted it to be the main focus of the piece, but I didn't want the outside of it to be left blank. The most difficulty I had when drawing this picture was making sure that the patterns drawn on the flower were all symmetrical. I overcame this by folding my paper into fourths before I started drawing, and also by rotating the paper as I worked.

The part of this drawing that I like the most is the contrast in color. I made sure that the darkest parts of each shape were next to the lightest parts. In this piece, contrast was what I focused on the most. This brings out the shape of each different shaded area. This artwork is abstract, so it doesn't necessarily have to be a certain image. It is just a collage of different shapes. The hardest part of creating this piece was that I needed to be sure that the shapes lined up so that the darkest part of one shape wasn't right next to the darkest part of another shape, and the same goes for the lighter parts of each shape. To avoid this, even after I had already started shading, I continues to put more and more shapes into the drawing.

My favorite part of this drawing is the color scheme used in the background. The bright colors that I used in the geometric pattern help to bring out the letters in the foreground. This artwork was meant to display my name in a creative way that helps to show my specific style of art. I like to use colors that have strong contrasts so that every part of the the picture stands out to its viewer. The hardest part of creating this piece was making sure that each triangle was up next to a triangle that was a different color, so that each individual shape could be seen, and so there were no messy blobs all over the picture. I was able to overcome this issue by coloring in the triangles one color at a time and counting to make sure that the amount of triangles I drew was proportional to the amount of colors I had.

My favorite part of this drawing was the detail in each flower. They were all different, and the different methods of shading and drawing that I used in each one helped make them look very realistic. The purpose of this sketch was to display depth ad detail. This was also the hardest part of creating this sketch, but I was able to overcome it by using pictures as a reference. Using pictures helped me develop the skill of being able to draw what I could see, which also led to my interest in drawing things in nature.

This is my favorite piece of art that I have created during freshman year. I love the simplicity, yet also the detail that pops out with help from the bright colors. The hardest part of making this portrait was that I was unexperienced with paint, and so that was a skill I had to acquire, as well as mixing the paint and being consistent with the different monochromatic shades. I overcame this difficulty by carefully picking the size of the brush, and also by making larger portions of on color paint so that I wouldn't run out and then have to struggle trying to match the shade. In the end, this helped me create the clean lines and details. This helped bring out the beauty of the actress that I was painting, and also helped make it closely resemble Audrey Hepburn.

This painting was created based off of an image I took of my school. My favorite part about this painting is the sky and how it blends from dark to light. The contrast between the dark sky and the light building helps the foreground pop out, and makes the details very clear. The hardest part about painting a piece of architecture was making sure its features were to scale. I used a ruler and lots of math and close measurements to overcome this issue that I was faced with, and the painting ended up looking almost exactly the way I wanted it to.

The purpose of creating this sketch was to practice shading and using different tones of the same medium to create depth. The most difficult part of this sketch was making sure that the light reflecting on the sphere was lined up well with the shadow beneath it. I used shading to make the shadow look realistic and stand out, and I also made the lines fade from hard to soft. I also referenced the scale I made at the top of the paper. My favorite part of creating this piece was blending the whites to make the ball appear as though light is shining on it, and watching the sphere slowly gain more depth and look more three dimensional.

Title: Reflections
|
This piece is a recreation of a picture I took when I was visiting Maine. Unfortunately, the picture was taken on a cloudy and foggy day, so I painted it in a sunny and clear skied setting. The hardest part about this picture was painting the rocks to look convincing, and not appear as just vast grey spaces. To overcome this difficulty, I used different shades of one color to help bring out the values and the layering on the rocks on the shore. I then decided to place a heron on the rocks to bring more depth to the scene by showing that the water and the trees were in the background and the heron and the rocks were in the foreground. My favorite part of this piece is the reflections because this is my first time experimenting with them .

Title: Sunset Reflection
|
This piece is a sunset over mountains. There are mountains in an lighter blue in the background and the shore is in a darker blue in the foreground. I was also experimenting with reflections in this painting, so the hardest part was making sure everything was reflected well and that the details on things such as the tree were all symmetrical. My favorite part about this painting is the color of the sky and how well it contrasts with the land.

Title: Abstract Oil Pastel
|
This artwork was my first experience with oil pastels. They are very colorful and bright, and they also blend very easily, but that makes a challenge because sometimes you don't want things to blend but they do anyways! That was were I had most difficulty in this piece. I overcame this issue by making sure that the most contrasting colors were next to each other so each different shape and section stood out, and I also just used my finger and layered the similar colors to blend. My favorite part about this piece is the many different values it possesses. It makes the piece appealing to the eyes and it makes it stand out. This oil pastel artwork was intended to be very abstract, so I began the project with no real pattern in mind. I did, however, make sure there was a wide variety of shapes, and if I did use the same shape twice, I made sure that it was a different size than the previous one. The many layers of different shapes gave this artwork lots of depth and texture, and I was very happy with the final result.

Title: Creation of Adam in the Clouds
|
This painting was meant to be practice for drawing hands. I love renaissance art, so I chose to create my own rendition of The Creation of Adam hands. The hands were definitely the most difficult part of this project, but I also enjoyed drawing them the most. It was very important that I included all of the values to show that the hand was bending in a humanly possible way, and to also bring out the details of the hand. My favorite part about this piece is how the hands stand out so well from the dark blues in the background.
|
Title: Hand
|
This painting was another practice with hands. I wanted to experiment with making the hand hold something, so I added a bouquet of flowers. The most difficult part about this painting was making sure I included all of the flowers details with the acrylic paint. My favorite part about this artwork is the depth that the background gives with the different values, almost creating the illusion of a spotlight on the center.
|
My favorite part about this piece is how three-dimensional the instruments look because of their values and the background shading. Making sure that all of the details were included in the instruments was the hardest part of creating this piece, but practicing still-life instruments helped me overcome this difficulty. I drew many sketches to create this final product. The shapes and the vibrant colors help imitate the rhythm and vibrations of the music.

Title: Concrete Hand
|
The project was meant to provide me with a three-dimensional model to base my hand sketches on. This helped me improve my skills with drawing hands. The most difficult part of this project was cutting the concrete hand out of the model. To overcome this challenge, I cut very carefully and in sections. To create this piece, I created a model and stuck my hand in, and then I poured concrete into the model and let it dry for several days. After that I cut it out and then I had the finished product.

This painting was inspired by the last monochromatic painting I completed of Audrey Hepburn. I wanted it to pop from the background, so I created a bright green, and I made the lines very clean so each value clearly stands out from the others. This painting took about a month, which was much faster than my last monochromatic painting. I would say that the most difficult part about creating this piece was recreating the different values of grey. I had to do many layers of paint to make sure that the shade was consistent and solid.

Title: Tiger Scratchboard
|
This was my first experience using a scratch board. I mostly used hatching to create the texture of the tigers fur, and in some places where I wanted the lightest values I used cross hatching. The most difficulty I had while creating this piece was creating the darker values to help differentiate the different parts of the Tiger's face. I split the face up into different sections to help avoid this problem, and most of the features were symmetrical which helped make the process a little easier. Overall I am happy with how the final result turned out.

This is my final product of my choice project. I painted over it many times and it was very difficult to get all of the different values in, but i finally decided to do just one single balloon instead of a whole group, and I like the result much better this way. I am also happy with the shadow that I added behind the balloon and the color scheme that I used.
